If you land in the morning you can realistically be at the Expo gates before you would have reached a hotel downtown. Allow extra time on busy days, when the approach roads carry far more cars than usual.
That short distance is worth planning around rather than ignoring. It means a same day visit is genuinely possible for anyone with a long connection or an early arrival. It also means the airport, and not the city centre, is your natural base for the Expo half of your trip.
Expo 2027 Belgrade occupies a purpose built site of about 25 hectares in Surcin, on the south western edge of the city, close to the Sava river and to Nikola Tesla Airport. The wider development includes a National Stadium seating 52,000, an aquatic centre and the Expo village. From central Belgrade the site lies roughly 15 kilometres to the west.
Surcin itself is a municipality rather than a district you would have visited before. There is no old town there and no restaurant street. Everything on that plot has been built for this event, which is why the access roads and the railway matter more here than at a typical fairground.
Expo 2027 runs from 15 May to 15 August 2027, a 93 day programme. It is a Specialised Expo recognised by the Bureau International des Expositions, the first ever held in the western Balkans. The theme is Play for Humanity, and more than 120 nations are expected to take part, each with its own pavilion on the Surcin site.
Three summer months is a short window, so pick your dates with the weather in mind. May in Belgrade is pleasant and mild. July and August are genuinely hot, often above 30 degrees, and the site is open ground with little mature shade. If you are coming in high summer, plan a morning or a late afternoon visit rather than the middle of the day.

This works when you land before noon and hotel check in is not until the afternoon. The only catch is luggage, because you will not get into an exhibition ground dragging a large suitcase. Sort out where the bags go before you land, not at the gate.

A new rail line is under construction linking central Belgrade, Nikola Tesla Airport and Surcin. The route runs 18.3 kilometres and includes six major structures, among them four bridges and a viaduct across the Surcin plain. The airport stop will sit about 500 metres from Terminal 1, connected by a pedestrian bridge.
Announced journey times are 15 to 20 minutes from Zemun Polje to the National Stadium, and around 30 minutes from the city centre to the complex. That would be a real improvement on today. Keep one thing in mind though. This is infrastructure still being built, and large projects of this kind slip. If you are planning a 2027 trip, have a plan that does not depend on the line opening on schedule.
There is a genuine trade off here and it is worth thinking through before you book a room.
Staying near the airport or in Surcin puts you minutes from the Expo gates. You get short, predictable rides every day and you avoid the city traffic entirely. What you give up is Belgrade itself, because the evening walk along Knez Mihailova, Skadarlija and the Kalemegdan fortress is a long way off.
Staying in the city centre gives you the city in the evenings and a 15 kilometre commute in the mornings. For a trip that is half Expo and half sightseeing, that is usually the better deal. Just count the journey twice a day, every day, when you compare room prices. A cheaper room on the wrong side of town rarely stays cheaper.
The site covers about 25 hectares and will hold pavilions from more than 120 nations. Seeing a serious share of that takes a full day, not an afternoon after lunch. Visitors who come for two nights and also want the city are effectively choosing between one good Expo day and two shallow ones.
What works, based on how our guests actually use their time: one full day for the Expo, one separate day for Belgrade on foot. The city centre does not need a car. Kalemegdan fortress, Knez Mihailova and Skadarlija are all walkable from one another, and that is the pleasant half of the trip.

Belgrade has buses and trams, and they are cheap. They are also crowded, not always intuitive for a first time visitor, and they do not reach the Expo site the way they reach the old fairground in town. For the daily Expo run, plan on a car of some kind rather than on working out a bus route with a suitcase in hand.
Two other things surprise visitors, so they are worth saying plainly. Summer heat is real. July and August regularly push past 30 degrees, and walking 20 minutes to a stop at two in the afternoon is a different experience here than in northern Europe. Evenings are the good part. Belgrade runs late, and the riverside and the old town are at their best after dark. That is an argument for staying central and commuting to the Expo, rather than the other way around.
